Public Art Installation at Sempra Energy

In 2009, Sherry Benn at Art du Jour contracted us to do a 2 part installation for the public art collection at the Sempra Energy Corporate Headquarters. We had previously done a comprehensive installation of an Arakawa Museum hanging system for their private collection in the corporate offices on the upper floors.

For this installation, Sherry had some unique artwork challenges that she wanted us to tackle.

Along with doing a typical museum style installation for the majority of the art, we had to “mount” a series of steel totems along a hallway gallery where they would show off their construction in a three dimensional manner.

We also had series of oversize photographic prints commissioned for the hallway leading to the dining area that needed to “float” on a bright red wall.

To solve the totem problem, we fabricated custom steel units that slotted into their hollow centers and mounted them to the wall on the top and bottom at 90 degrees. The look was accomplished beautifully, if I do say so myself.

On the photographic series, we had a set of custom fabricated plexiglas panels fabricated to float the images into by The Frame Maker, and then mounted them to the wall with a standoff system. The red paint was particularly tough to work on, as it had a tendency to scuff easily. The result was equally as impressive with the dramatic background.
